The event aims to raise funds to help support a hospital that has been at the forefront of helping those in need.

The Athens-based Elpis Hospital is facing a multifaceted crisis. As an institution that serves all individuals, regardless of their medical coverage, Elpis is in an especially difficult situation. The financial downturn in Greece has created a logistical nightmare for the hospital. No longer on the payroll, personnel volunteer their time to care for the needy. Reports of shortages of medical supplies are becoming increasingly widespread. Resources intended for medical research are allocated elsewhere, and patients are often checked out prematurely to ensure that the growing number of indigents receive some medical attention.

Ancient Greek Medicine: A Legacy For The Future
by Dr. Alain Touwaide
Historian of Medicine and Scientific Director of
The Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions
The event is co-sponsored by:
The Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at LMU
The Hellenic American Medical and Dental Society (HAMDS).

The name of Hippocrates is synonym of Medicine. However exact this might be, such identification hides more than it tells about Greek medicine and its legacy to the world. Historian of Science Alain Touwaide will guide us in a journey to the roots of the art of healing in a captivating lecture that encapsulates the results of a life devoted to searching for Greek manuscripts all over the world, deciphering their texts, and bringing to light the precious information they contain.

Dr. Alain Touwaide, a Research Associate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. is a Belgian-born classicist who has obtained a PhD in Classics from the University of Louvain, Belgium, in 1981. Since then he has been doing research on the History of Greek Medicine all over the world and has been introducing generations of students to the topic in universities worldwide. To foster research on ancient medicine he and his wife anthropologist Emanuela Appetiti have co-founded the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions as a research and education center devoted to the study of ancient medicine.
